The Decatur County Board of Education requires that all students attend the school in the zone in which they reside unless they are in a specialized program that contains students across school zones. Any exceptions to this policy must be made through the “School Choice Plan.”
If your child will be in grades K-4 during the 2018-2019 school year and you desire to apply for a school out of your zone using the “School Choice Plan,” you will need to complete an application during the week of April 23 - April 27, 2018. Applications may be obtained (during Choice Week) at the Decatur County Board of Education, 100 West Street, between the hours of 8:00 AM and 4:00 PM or printed from the website www.dcboe.com. Applications will be available and accepted ONLY during the week of April 23 - April 27, 2018. If you have questions regarding the “School Choice Plan” or the applications procedures, please contact Mr. John H. Wooden at 248-2806.
The availability of slots will be contingent upon the final outcome of the District’s plans to potentially consolidate one of its elementary schools.
Decatur County Schools is a Strategic Waiver System, which allows our system to waive specific state board rules. In our current strategic waiver, we chose to waive O.G.C.A 20-2-283 & 20-2-284. This waiver allows us as a system not to retest students for the 2017-2018 school year. The wavier also allows us to be able to use other vital information from your child’s entire school year and not only state assessment scores in the promotion and retention policy for the 2017-2018 school year.

Flu season is well underway. We are seeing many cases in Decatur County Schools. Flu is a very contagious illness. Please keep your children home until they are fever free without medication for 24 hours. If your child has fever, they are CONTAGIOUS! Also, if your child has been vomiting/diarrhea, please keep them home. Remember to wash hands with soap and hot water and to cover your cough.
Flu Symptoms are achy head, dry cough (can be severe), decreased appetite, achy muscles, fever/chills, fatigue (weakness) can last 2 weeks.

Out of an abundance of caution for the safety of our students, all schools in Decatur County will be canceled tomorrow, Wednesday January 17th, for students and staff due to the possibility for icy and unsafe road conditions during the morning hours. We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause but the weather conditions tomorrow are too questionable at this time to jeopardize the safety of our students or our staff.
We will be back to our normal schedule Thursday January 18th.

The uncertainty of the future track of Hurricane Irma and its potential impact on our area has led us to cancel school for all Decatur County Schools on Monday, September 11th and Tuesday, September 12th. We are hopeful that our area sees very little impact but the uncertainty remains too high to take any chances with the safety of our students and staff. Schools will reopen on Wednesday, September 13th unless developments change at which time we will update you all. Thank you and be safe.

Georgia Parent Survey
The Georgia Parent Survey is also modeled after the student survey and contains 24 questions. Parents may complete the survey using their personal computer, smartphone or tablet. For parents that do not have access to the Internet, school administrators should consider scheduling dates and times to allow parents to complete the Georgia Parent Survey at school. All parents should be encouraged to participate in the Georgia Parent Survey because the data will be used as part of the calculation of the School Climate Star Rating. Survey responses are anonymous and will be submitted directly to the Georgia Department of Education for analysis. The Georgia Parent Survey is also available in Spanish. Parents may select the Spanish version within the survey. Results from the Georgia Parent Survey will not be available to the public and will not be posted online.
