Georgia Milestones Re-Test Information

Decatur County Schools is a Strategic Waiver System, which allows our system to waive specific state board rules. In our current strategic waiver, we chose to waive O.G.C.A 20-2-283 & 20-2-284. This waiver allows us as a system not to retest students for the 2017-2018 school year. The wavier also allows us to be able to use other vital information from your child’s entire school year and not only state assessment scores in the promotion and retention policy for the 2017-2018 school year.

Parents, on Thursday, March 8th from 6:30 to 7:00, Mr. Chip Davis will be at West Bainbridge Elementary to make a presentation regarding the upcoming Georgia Milestones Assessment. This assessment is administered to all third and fourth grade students. This informative meeting is open to all parents, and we especially encourage third and fourth grade parents to attend. The purpose of the meeting will be to inform stakeholders of what students can expect when they begin testing. We hope to see you here for this very important meeting.

From The Principal

As we approach the midpoint of our school year, I just wanted to send a message to let you know how much we enjoy working with your children here at West Bainbridge Elementary.  Your personal child is what motivates us to get out of bed in the morning and come to work each day.  We want to empower them to go out in the world and thrive.  It is a true blessing and gift to us to know that we can influence tomorrow with what we do today as we work with the children here at West Bainbridge Elementary.  I am thankful to have such a strong and gifted group of teachers and staff members here at West Bainbridge that are willing to go over and above to reach and teach the children in their classrooms.  I am also thankful for the support that we get from our families and from our community as it certainly takes a team working together to educate our children.  It is my sincerest desire that we all realize how blessed we are at this time of year and continue to work together as a team for our students here at West Bainbridge.  Best wishes to you and yours during this special season!

Decatur County Schools Closed Monday 11th & Tuesday 12th

Parents and Community Members,

The uncertainty of the future track of Hurricane Irma and its potential impact on our area has led us to cancel school for all Decatur County Schools on Monday, September 11th and Tuesday, September 12th. We are hopeful that our area sees very little impact but the uncertainty remains too high to take any chances with the safety of our students and staff. Schools will reopen on Wednesday, September 13th unless developments change at which time we will update you all.  Thank you and be safe.

Eclipse Information

Parents and community members, as you may know on August 21st we will be experiencing a rare solar eclipse. In our area, the eclipse will begin around 1:09 p.m. and end around 4:06 p.m. with an expected peak around 2:41 p.m.  with an approximate blockage of 87% of the sun at the peak of the eclipse. It will be a very interesting phenomenon for our area to experience. Our teachers will be using this event as a teachable moment across our district as we have various activities planned.

On any given day it is never safe to stare directly into the sun without proper safety glasses, and this is no different during an eclipse. Please help us remind your students of these facts so that everyone can have a safe and enjoyable experience during the eclipse.

Decatur County Schools will be on a regular schedule on August 21st and sees no need to shift our release times and cause any undue stress on our parents and their schedules.

Thank you for your support. We are all hopeful that the experience of the eclipse in our area will be a memorable one.

Hour of Code

West Bainbridge Elementary participated in the Hour of Code during the week of December 7th - 11th. What is the Hour of Code? It is a one-hour activity during which students of all ages can choose from a variety of self-guided tutorials, for kindergarten and up. Tutorials work on any modern browser, tablet, smartphone, or even with no computer at all. Code.org’s own tutorials feature Disney’s Frozen, Scrat from Ice Age, Angry Birds, Plants vs. Zombies, Minecraft, and Star Wars. Once students see what they create right before their eyes, they’re empowered to keep going. Why computer science? Every 21st-century student should have the opportunity to take part in creating technology that’s changing our world. The basics help nurture creativity and problem-solving skills, and prepare students for any future career. But most schools still don’t teach computer science. West Bainbridge Elementary hopes to change that.

Pre-K Pet Smart Grant Mrs. Payne's Class received the Pet Smart Grant

Pre-K students from Mrs. Trenise Price and Mrs. Jan Payne’s Pre-K class at West Bainbridge Elementary School were thrilled to learn that they had received an $80.00 Grant from PetSmart in Dothan, Alabama for a new 10 gallon aquarium with all the extras.  The students were very concerned when they saw their old aquarium had developed a small leak and had leaked out half of the water.  Fortunately, Mrs. Payne had been approached by the manager of PetSmart in Dothan a week earlier about applying for the grant.  The new aquarium, filter, hood, light, gravel, and decorative plants came just in time to “Save the Day.”  Ms. Freeman, Decatur County Pre-K Coordinator is pictured admiring the new aquarium and congratulating the class for winning the grant.

Honoring the Peanut

Dear Parents,
Decatur County is second in the state of Georgia for peanut production. On March 15th, we will be honoring the peanut farmers in our county for their hard work. As part of the celebration, students will be allowed to dress up as a peanut farmer or even as a peanut. Be creative as this is meant to be a fun way for us to recognize the peanut farmers in our community. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Queridos padres,

"Why I teach"

"Teaching for me is my calling, my way of life. It is also my way of "paying it forward" to all of the teachers that gave me so much during my school life. My life was molded and guided by the Stan Killoughs and the Barbara Murrahs of the world. I strive to be that for my students. I teach so that my students have a place they can feel safe and loved. When my time on Earth is over I want to have made a forever positive impact on our future generations. My sole purpose as a teacher is to not only educate children but to give them the love and guidance that they deserve." Mary Jo Boutwell
