March 13, 2020: Update from Superintendent on School Closure

Dear Parents, Faculty, and Staff,

Due to the increase fear of spreading COVID-19 and at the guidance of the Governor’s Office, Decatur County schools will suspend all school activities and classes beginning Monday, March 16th for two weeks. This two-week suspension coincides with Spring Break so students will not return to school until Monday, April 6th.

It is the hopes of the Governor’s Office that keeping individuals isolated over this time period will better allow public health to identify and treat those infected with COVID-19 and reduce the spread.

During the time away from school our system has provided online resources for parents. Students can continue their active learning by visiting our web-page at www.dcboe.com. There students can find more information and links to online learning activities. Please note, these resources are certainly not required but are available for your student at your pleasure.

At home learning made easy

This continues to be a fluid situation and we will keep you updated as the situation evolves.

Sincerely,
Tim Cochran, Superintendent

March 11, 2020:  Superintendent Update

Dear Parents,

We are continuing to work with the Department of Public Health and monitoring the latest updates from the Corona virus (COVID-19). According to Department of Public Health officials, “the risk of COVID-19 to the general public still remains low.” We do not have plans for school closures at this time but may be scaling back on travel to areas where our students would be subjective to large crowds.

Public health officials continue to advise best every-day healthy practices like frequently washing hands and staying home when you are sick. For the best information we encourage you visit the following websites: https://dph.georgia.gov/novelcoronavirus and https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/index.html. Additionally, the Georgia Department of Education has released information at

https://www.gadoe.org/External-Affairs-and-Policy/communications/Pages/coronavirus.aspx

We have been taking extra precautions with our school sanitation and are focusing on sanitizing high-touch areas like water fountains, door handles, etc., with virus-killing products. We also are working through our school administration and school nurses to ensure students and staff understand and follow best every-day healthy practices like frequently washing hands.

If your student is not feeling well we encourage you to keep them home. Starting today until further notice we will suspend perfect attendance incentives and rewards. We do not want to encourage a student to come to school if they are sick and need to stay home. Understand that you are the parent and you ultimately make the decision to keep your kids at home anytime you believe that is necessary and we want to work with you to ensure that our community stays as healthy as possible.

We are dedicated to the health and safety of our students. This situation continues to evolve and we will continue to provide information as necessary.

Sincerely,
Tim Cochran, Superintendent
Decatur County Schools
