2nd Grade December News
We hope everyone had a restful Thanksgiving Break! We are jumping into December with many exciting activities in the classroom. We are looking forward to sharing our students’ Science Projects as apart of our home/school connection. The project due date is December 6, 2019.
We will be finishing up our second 9 weeks soon. We have learned about long vowels and long vowel teams, compound words, contractions, comparing and contrasting, multiple meaning words, genres, making inferences and we have been practicing our reading fluency. This month in writing we will continue to work with informational texts. Students are learning how and why authors include text features in their writing. We will be writing 'procedural texts' and informational reports on people, sun, and the solar system.Studying nonfiction mentor texts, they learn to add text features such as diagrams, headings, and captions. They are also learning how to develop and strengthen their writing. It is extremely important that every second grader can identify and distinguish text features. The first semester is drawing to a close;so we are anticipating with confidence the progress our students have made. Especially as it pertains to understanding the structure of literary non- fiction, asking relevant questions, paraphrasing/retelling what their reading was about.
In math we will conclude unit two in Ready Math. Our second graders will continue to add and subtract three digit numbers with regrouping: Interpret that three digits of a three digit number represent amounts of hundreds, tens, and ones, and read and write numbers to 1000 and compare two three-digit numbers, recording the results, step word problems. In addition our second graders are expected to:
Count within 1000 and identify skip counting patterns by 5’s, 10’s and 100’s
Apply different strategies, fluently add and subtract within 100 and solve one-and two-step word problems within 100.
Apply different strategies, fluently add and subtract within 1000, add up to four two-digit numbers and solve one-and two-step word problems within 100.
Explain why different addition and subtraction strategies work.
We thank you for your continued support your child at home. Please utilize the following tips
Have your child read aloud each day for at least 10-20 minutes ( A. R. book would be great!) Note: Some students also have a repeated reading folder.
Support your child in completing and returning homework.
Practice addition and subtraction fluency daily ( flashcards).
We will continue to work in small groups where children are able to receive instruction at their level. Our goal is to build reading and math fluency. Reading fluency is the ability to read smoothly without having to sound out high-frequency words. Math fact fluency is the ability to answer all math fact questions instantly from recall without having to think through the problem.Students should be able to recall math facts instantly without having to count on their fingers or hesitate to think about the answer.
Again, Happy Holidays to you and your loved-ones !!
